Poonch admin observes World Disability Day with verve
High time to mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities: DC
POONCH, DECEMBER 03: To promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities, the District Administration Poonch today observed World Disability Day by holding an awareness event.
District Development Commissioner Poonch, Inder Jeet was the chief guest at the event.
The event witnessed distribution of disability cards, sports kits, and free medical camp for persons with special needs. Appreciation certificates were also presented to the media persons.
A cultural programme on the theme of World Disability Day was also presented. Specially abled persons also presented a cultural program which was highly adored by the audience.
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner said that the Government is very much concerned for the empowerment of the PwDs and a number of initiatives including financial assistance in the shape of pension, free education, free medical treatment, free travel, vocational programmes etc are being provided to them to enable them live a respectful life in the society.
The DC also sought the cooperation of civil society in spreading awareness and gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
Highlighting the measures being taken for the upliftment of the PWDs, the DC said that the District Administration is extending special care and assistance to the specially abled persons and a number of measures are being taken for their welfare.
The DC said that several specially abled persons have shown their caliber in different fields and became a source of inspiration for the normal persons. He said that the need of an hour is to recognise their hidden talent and provide them a suitable environment for their growth.
He also sought the active cooperation of all the stakeholders for educating the specially-abled persons about various government schemes and programmes launched for their well being and motivate them to avail the benefits of the same.
Senior superintendent of Police, Dr.Vinod Kumar, Civil administration, students, staff, NYK Volunteers besides a large number of specy abled people were present on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Principal Government Degree college Poonch said that specially abled people are an integral part of our community. He said it is the duty of every individual to treat them with honour and respect.
Prof. Fateh Mohd Abassi conducted the proceedings of the programme.
